Ashwin Architects designs a vertical bungalow that testifies that a small area or a small budget isn’t a limitation, when creating a meaningful and habitable space…

With all manner of challenges being inherent to any project, Ar. Ashwin Ananth endorses, “An honest and open dialogue between the client and architect can transform a house into a home”.

Proof of this lies in the firm’s proficiency in handling a tight plot of 21ft x 27ft in a dense urban area in Bengaluru. With the onus on space planning, 2000 sq. ft. is beautifully manipulated to meet the requirement of 3-bedrooms plus all amenities including a car park.

The house opens up to a large formal area achieved by a play of levels. Stark white spaces give way to a landscaped atrium with a water fountain adding a dimension of organic warmth to the home, opening up the area to have natural light and ventilation filtering in. Splashed with colourful accent pieces amidst a homely, uncluttered ambience, the palette of wood and stone defines the contemporary lines.

Aided by the use of multiple levels, interesting pockets of functional spaces emerge, flanked by greenery; one such is the study, which stands out as a large ‘glass rectangle’ in the façade.

The dynamic lines of the staircases are juxtaposed with engaging compositional spaces like the temple carved out in the midst of the living area, almost welcoming at the entrance. This synergy balances out the double-heighted living area with the design of short horizontal bands that accentuate both, linearity and verticality; the latter equally adjudged from the street, speaks for the ingenuity of composition.

Keeping lines and forms simple and straight, the home comes into focus with its detailing that avers to a sensitive approach; and its monochrome palette, in a no-nonsense subliminal ethos.
