ZZ Architects undertakes a study in the sensitive and sagacious use of contemporary elements to highlight a home filled with mementoes…

Responding to a couple’s passion for collecting precious art and antiques, the home carries not an ounce of the stodginess associated with museums or galleries. Nor does its aesthetic appear forced. Instead, the apartment exudes a warm, comforting atmosphere.

A meticulously crafted palette of contemporary materials, textures and colours reflects the architects’ and homeowners’ affinity for all things bespoke. Muted furnishings in natural hues with pops of colour constitute a silent backdrop to focal pieces, infusing the home with a sense of earthiness.

The living room is a fragmented space with distinct seating areas and includes an informal and formal lounge. The latter bedecked in wood, carries a geometrical floor pattern that instantly establishes it as an antithesis to the former. Elegant brass trims and a handmade silk finish court the walls of this space that also converts it to a home theatre. An adjacent deck and a casual TV lounge that marks the entrance of the private quarters and serves as a pre-bedtime transitional space for the family add to the luxe quotient.

Materiality rules. Plush marble details vie for attention against a contrasting quilted wall; custom solid wood furniture is highlighted against softly lit stone wall; white patio furniture is boldly juxtaposed with red mosaic tiled flooring... An extensive use of natural stone and wood communicate the quality of strength; a fact best portrayed by a quartz dining table, one side of which is masterfully crafted in softer tones to emit light.

Little nooks and corners come alive with stories of the couple’s travels and experiences. For example, a white wall in the dining area becomes a fitting home for a century-old intricately carved altar, once installed in a church in Kochi. An 80-year-old handwoven Tibetan carpet; a framed woven cloth of Masakali, one of the nine jewels of Emperor Akbar… are some of the prized possessions that occupy pride of place in this high-end Mumbai home, representing a perfect marriage of ethnicity and contemporaneity.
