The classic bandhini breezes in sorbet hues and stylish accents to spice up ensembles this season…

It's official. The humble bandhej from Kutch has shrugged off its traditional version and emerged in contemporary silhouettes to pervade your ensembles beyond the festive season.

Says fashion designer Krishna Mehta, “The edgy transformation makes bandhini versatile, spanning jackets, indo-western ensembles, sarees, achkans, dupattas, dhoti-kurtas...in a clutch of materials and textures in organic cottons, Chanderi silks...” So here is your how-to-pick guide for bandhini inclusions in your wardrobe…

Boho Hues
Says fashion designer Anoli Shah, “Eye popping combinations in vibrant blues and green; vivid reds and yellow, classic blacks and whites, and bright pink and purple make an unbeatable splash.” Krishna explains that warm tones work best, when it comes to bandhini. “But generally, people prefer all bright colours since the print looks individualistic on every single one of them,” she says. “Saffron, Rani pink, mango and Parrot green are some of the favoured colours. Experimenting with offbeat combinations like rich purples with ruddy pinks, as well as Rani pink with Parrot green make for a startling affair.”

Sparkle Up
You can tweak your bandhini attire to rev up the glam quotient. Says Krishna, “The nouveau trend is to add sequins, tassels, pearls, or gota work to enhance the look and instantly transform a simple piece to a much more formal one, perfect for weddings.” Adds Anoli, “Mirror work brings in a spot of sparkle and shine and tassels add to the overall appeal of bandhini.” Flowing dupattas, glamorous shararas and kurtas add up to the rich appeal of traditional.

Edgy Ethnic
“Both men and women can slip on a bandhini stole or scarf, keeping the rest of the look simple,” advises Anoli. For an iconic and distinctive look, mix and match adroitly. Says Krishna, “Men can sport bandhini pocket squares to add a touch of nostalgia to their bandhgalas, Nehru jackets or suits. Women can team a bandhini blouse with a printed skirt or wear a bandhini kurta with monotone sharara pants for a classic-meets-modern look. Wear a short bandhini jacket with flowy palazzo pants to spell chic and contemporary,” she continues. “For a boho look, wear the bandhini dupatta the regular way and then belt it at the waist. Or drape it on your back and let it hang on both sides like a cape.”

Whatever your pick and style, wear bandhini with panache and make your heart simply sing aloud.
