With the Sassy Spoon, Mumbai, interior designer, Shabnam Gupta demonstrates how an apt theme can uplift spaces and push interior design to another level of sass! Check it out...

If you are one of those, who liked Dolores Umbridge’s office from Harry Potter, you will absolutely love what The Orange Lane has done with a 1900 square feet space now known as The Sassy Spoon, Mumbai! This 85-cover fine-dine and bar is splashed with colour, mostly pink and its shades; making the milieu – simultaneously, playful and calming.

Random studies show that the colour pink can curb appetite; however this ground floor eatery might just achieve the opposite! In a case of European-meets-quirky, this place packs mismatched knick-knacks into an overall comfortable and laid back bistro setting.

Every single surface is catered to in this fairytale-like ambience that is complete with an indoor and alfresco seating area. The bar is definitely the place for casual conversations, while larger group seating is made possible in the far corners. Using every nook and corner is the highlight of this design; table tops, air conditioning ducts, tree trunks and even skirting bands... all have a large role to play in creating the avant-garde atmosphere.

Huge amount of effort and emotional design has gone into the lighting, furniture and finishes palette. Evident through conscious detailing viz., pink -dipped chair legs, brass-edged tabletops, and decorative lattice work and varied ceiling treatments. In an attempt to not repeat herself, the designer chooses an inventive approach, and develops character and depth in a space that lacks definition.

Does the colour palette seem too overpowering? Maybe, but the theme sticks and is definitely a crowd puller. Once you leave the place however, brace yourself for a sudden pink filter that will disappear slowly…
