Luxury of Space

Space is a luxury and Office for Contemporary Architecture, Indore, has endorsed this through their design of a bungalow in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh...

Plenty of glass and windows, complimented by select modern architectural design elements, make this plush corner white-and-grey house stand out in the locality – a key demand made in the client’s initial brief.

OCA has ensured maximum utilization of the plot and its surroundings; firstly, by advantaging the open park in front of the house to offer an uninterrupted view of the skyline; and secondly, by exploiting the 100% FAR (floor area ratio) that was granted to the plot to carve out amazingly spacious personal spaces, which were beyond the client’s imagination.

With large windows in each room ensuring plenty of natural light and ventilation, the interiors look nothing less than those seen in some extravagant television soap operas. They probably had to go beyond their motto ‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’ as the bungalow, by no means, is simple – thanks to its large chandeliers and hotel-like ambiance – but it sure is sophisticated.

The four bedrooms, the drawing, living and dining rooms and the kitchen are tastefully done. The client’s request for four parking lots, besides rooms for servants and drivers, and a gym is also met with. One of the most admirable features is the interior landscape created between the drawing and living area, which becomes the highlight of the home.

Use of positive space, clearly avoiding clutter is a big plus. Added to this, are the split levels that create an element of intrigue. Complimenting this, the material palette is understated and generally neutral. This leaves a lot of room to play with colours in the soft furnishings to add to the ambiance. Textural interventions in the form of a lamp shade, wall treatment or even juxtaposing wooden panelling with painted surfaces lends a plush feel. Lighting is discerningly ambient and augments the understated interiors.

While the client’s brief for a bungalow, where one can rejuvenate and unwind has been met with – as the house is plush and luxuriant; the theme to “promote an organic way of living” though does not come across effectively.

  4. That's such an interesting work! Rarely we get to see such kind of work from designers in Indore. Most of the work otherwise is so comercial. I have seen your other works as well in Society Interiors. They are really amazing !! :)
