The Ashleys redesign a chic minimalist home blessed with breathtaking views of the city skyline and coastal breeze from the Arabian sea...

Inspired by the straight-out-of-movie vibe of New York homes, this redesign accommodates the flamboyant personalities of a young couple in a two-bedroom apartment in South Mumbai.

Sporting an elegant monochromatic palette of deep grey, the bespoke design reflects the homemakers’ penchant for minimalism and revolves around an open plan and flexible spaces. Consequently, the refurbishing exercise facilitates the expansion of the existing space, while it redefines the interiors with new functionality.

With a rationale of creating volumes that are not just limited to merely demarcating spaces, the vast open plan curates a fluid pattern of spatial functions; overcoming the conundrum of privacy through fold-able flush doors that divide spaces desirably.

The living room flows into the kitchen with an enclosed powder room in the corner and contemporary breakfast island concurrent to the living room, crafting a levelled volume that is made flexible by means of fold-able doors. The existing bedrooms open to form a suite with a lounge that experiments with transitional spaces, while the lounge room can be turned into a guest room and used independently, when needed.

In an endeavour to encompass functionality in every inch of available space, the walls between the living room and bedroom realign to curate extra space for a walk-in closet that is customised for the lady of the house. Browsing pockets formed as a result of this realignment, create a defined lobby for each bedroom giving unobstructed access, whilst a   folding door separates the bedrooms at will.

Material composition is robust with lustrous bronze Armani flooring amidst the variant palette of furniture that builds a distinct character in the living room. Each design element compliments the other while standing unique in its own frame: the black glass panelling of the sliding door at the transition between living room and kitchen multiplies the scale of space encompassing freedom in user experience, while the mirrored storage bordering the lobby leading to the lounge room expands the volume, avoiding congestion.

Seamlessness and camouflage take centre-stage as the wall behind the square-fluted wooden television unit is composed of a grey grid that engulfs the main door, resulting in a seamless wall. Similarly, storage units coalesce into the walls, engraving minimal planes. Subsequently, the walk-in closet at the entrance of the bedroom wrapped of fluted solid wood cladding, stands unique, curating a dramatic entrance into the bedroom and hiding the doors of walk in closet and en-suite bathroom. Likewise, the hand-trowelled grey textured paint on the wall behind the living room seating camouflages the two doors that open into bedroom, thus maintaining the fluidity of planes.

Minimalistic cues show up through furniture defined in classic geometry and distinguished by material. The colour palette and contemporary art narrates the enthusiastic journey of design, while contributing to functionality.  The abstract paintings channelling life into each space radiate the essence of dark palettes in the home. Adding to the minimal accents, photo albums accentuate the subtle palette of the lounge while making special provision for memories, past and future.
