Architect and interior designer Rahul Naik ingeniously chisels a modern-industrial design language creating a unique brand identity for a trendy fine-dine on the first floor of a busy commercial complex in Mysuru…

An interior designer’s conviction and visualisation work like a magic wand, especially when a not-so-promising, half-finished shell cries out to be transformed!

Mysuru Gonguras is a beautifully designed restaurant and party hall that rises not just above its immediate surroundings - a congested, busy locality that hosts hospitals and a neighbouring eatery – but also fulfils the aspirations of the ten partners involved, including their desire to cull out a proposed franchise-worthy establishment.

However, the beauty of this fine-dine does not arise out of plush materials. Instead, it is inherent in the makeup of the interiors using frugal materials that are transformed to portray an upbeat aura.  Exploiting commonly available materials and locally procured expertise, the interior envelope comprises a false ceiling of corrugated Tata steel sheets (commonly a roofing material) that cleverly camouflage the AC ducts. PVC drainpipes painted in vibrant colours constitute the electrical ducting and imaginatively drop down at their T-joints to become light fixtures. Black coloured MS grills house 3-mm thick non-toughened coloured glass sporting primary hues; this forms the partition walls that do more than bifurcate the rectangular expanse into a private party zone - they infuse the much needed colour into the ambience, aptly offsetting the neutral beige walls and flooring and the white-grey of the false ceiling. Patterned wire-cut brick walls laid out in traditional Flemish bond, integrated brick seating and wood in the furniture add warmth.

A designated lift lobby crafts the initial impact as it sections the rectangular expanse into two halves. Overall, the eatery is sectioned into four zones: the party-on-demand zone behind the coloured glass partition, where furniture can be reorganised impromptu; a large section for families and large groups with sofa seating and in-built brick seating on a slightly elevated floor level; a large 800 sq. ft kitchen and an expanse highlighted by a feature wall that is artistically anointed with a dark night sky – its white dots sparkling under the dramatically camouflaged LED lights like stars in the sky. Clearly the highlight of the restaurant, it also makes for a captivating selfie point!
