Defining an architectural identity through sharp volumes, an internal atrium and a fractured façade, Anagram Architects design the Cleft House - a vertical coherence of spaces, compositions and materials…
Located amidst typical row houses in a dense Delhi precinct, the out-of-box design of this North-facing residence on a narrow plot of 326 sq. m. fronting a busy road, stands in stark contrast with its boundary-sharing neighbours. Conceptualised as an inward-looking volume, the design addresses the acute lack of visual privacy, openness and low exposure to natural light and ventilation. In this, the approach deviates from archetypal plotted residences, their characteristic circulation patterns and spatial arrangements to present a fresh, contemporary take on the typology through the daring and bold use of geometry.
The built mass, interrupted by a lengthwise aperture, accommodates an atrium and a spiral staircase. Split into two geometric volumes that express the configuration of both inner and outer living spaces, the design recaptures the charm of the outdoor space across connecting bridges that along with the spiral staircase constitute the spine of the edifice. Unlike regular, fenestrated volumes and surface renders, the deep void of the atrium also forms the heart of the residence – a naturally ventilated, social courtyard and the centrally binding circulation core with visual access across the levels.
The faceted, insulated stone façade adds dimension and variation to the structure, forming a layer of privacy to the front while the service areas, en-suites and closets at the rear enjoy the reduced southern heat gain. The interior angular geometry with its rooftop glazing allows natural daylight to pour into the interiors, forming various linear light patterns on different surfaces through the day.
The building’s structure is a composition of faceted columns supporting flanking beams and slabs, with metal framework on the ground and terrace levels. The facade panels rest on recessed metal plates, mounted onto a geometry of metal frames. Lending visual contrast are black and white stone clad surfaces and wood and concrete finishes.
Demonstrating a play of geometry, structure and function, the Cleft House is deft in changing typological design perspectives.
