Complex forms are crafted to look simple in this contemporary Mumbai home

Designer Sunali Goenka of her eponymous firm infuses oodles of warmth into a contemporary apartment, where she marries the bucolic with the chic!

Located in suburban Mumbai, this apartment which is the amalgamation of two individual two-bedroom apartments is the luxe abode of Mr. Suresh Agarwal – a well-loved businessman and philanthropist known for his selfless path-breaking work for cancer patients. 

Catering to the desire for a state-of-the-art, tech-friendly contemporary home, the designer carves out a narrative of each room with diligent spatial planning. So, we have an office cum study and en-suite bedrooms in addition to an arresting entrance foyer that sets the design vocabulary of the entire home.

Capped with an undulating ceiling and colour-changing LEDs that light up a water body, the entrance foyer is warm and welcoming with the added attraction of the temple that can be shuttered with an artistically panelled door. 

The home leverages natural material to refreshing advantage. A versatile palette of marble, slate and wood build up the canvas as the designer ups her quotient for the different hues of wood and stone in her toolbox and makes full use of it; creating a synergy that combines wood in its different textures and hues (light and dark). The ties that bind this house are in the rich wood theme of the panelled surfaces that dominate the living room, the cosy dining nook, even the custom furniture.

Liberal use of design elements such as alcoves and bay windows are sprinkled generously across the entire flat.  Expansive bay windows bring the outside in, while alcoves are used to create cosy, intimate spaces.  Zones are demarcated by rough and polished overlapping planes at different levels, i.e. floor, walls and ceilings; while automation, mood lighting and high-end gadgets make the space extremely modern and user-friendly. No room is complete without accessories. Furniture, paintings, textured drapes, rich headboards, playful wallpaper cleverly accessorise the spaces, true to the personality of its occupants.
