Design Plus revamps an old bar in Noida’s Club 26 into a modern space using a material-rich palette, textures and varied forms to create a link between the outdoors and indoors…

Design Plus, a Delhi-based architecture and design consultancy, gives the existing bar at Club 26 in Noida, a complete interior overhaul by critiquing existing elements. Pliant Bar, the refurbished civil extension, retains the external elevations and overlooks the club gardens on one side and the street on the other.

Led by architects Arun and Abhishek Bij, the team adopts the mathematic principle of parametric design across various elements in the bar. There’s the hard-to-miss drop ceiling, a fluid surface that appears to flow into the exterior. Fabricated as single and double curved surfaces generated using hundreds of unique coplanar profiles, it is equally arresting as an outdoor surface, where it serves as a second skin that shields the building from the harsh southwest sun.

As a parametric design element, this surface, comprising a series of rafters built with structural steel sections and cladded with fibre concrete boards, physically and visually links the exterior to the interiors.

Adept contouring is also observed in the bar counter that encourages intimate conversations sans any unnecessary interference by the bartender. It also adds seats to the existing bar space. As many as 296 unique ply profiles with a thickness of 24 mm each and coated with varied laminates work in unison to achieve a fluid, multi-textured effect.

Besides the 5ft x 13 ft cantilevered balcony that overlooks the club gardens, glazed windows with strategically placed mullions and transoms offer guests unhindered views, while sitting or standing.

By employing a mixed bag of materials — concrete fibreboard, M.S. steel sections, vitrified tiles, birch ply and teak wood in varied dimensions, and addressing areas of concern including ergonomics and lighting, Design Plus Architects achieves the desired environment that is targeted at enhancing the current patronage.
