Parth Chitte uses design as a differentiator to enhance a compact 334 sq. ft.
salon into a chic business proposal…
Small
spaces command diligence and detail in design to authenticate business
viability. Mihir’s Hair Studio in Vadodara, Gujarat, came with a list of
requirements that exceeded not just the floorplan, but also the expectations of
a booming business in a vicinity that already had many of its ilk.
Staying
in business is at one end of the spectrum and garnering business by blatantly
luring clientele is at the other. Parth opted for the latter. He has not only
opened the compact space with an intriguing ceiling design, but captures passers-by
attention via the glass-fronted façade that gives a tantalising glimpse of the
interiors.
Starting
out by conceptualising a dramatic attention shift from the street, indoors – he
designs the ceiling with exposed patterns and distorted light troughs that pop
with bright colours, drawing eyes upwards from the streets, creating an illusion
of height and depth. Having caught one’s attention despite its first-floor location,
he proceeds to cull out an interior envelope that takes off from the same
geometric distortions as complementary wall niches, angular furniture, stations
reclaimed with edged mirrors… following a pattern in almost every function of
the salon.
Keeping the
colour palette light and reflective, space is enhanced and an aesthetic use of
mirrors at intervals, further augments it. Mood lighting is strategically introduced
especially in the spa area, seemingly adding volume. Whilst the compactness and
linearity of the space is effectively broken by the arresting ceiling, pops of
colour in the products on display add a playful feel, making up for the
functional neutrality of the interior - carefully anointed with P.U. coating,
laminates, bevelled mirrors and toughened glass. A semi-leather finish in a
soothing shade of pearl makes the final contribution to the soothing and
refreshing ambience!
