designs Vadodara airport as the second greenest airport in India – a dynamic
edifice with sustainability at its core…
A simple yet
dynamic form characterizes the air transport facility at Vadodara, Gujarat.
Designed and executed by Creative Group International Architectural
Consultants, the sleek contemporary structure spread across 17,500 sq. m is
designed to increase the efficiency of resources and accommodate a large capacity
of 700 passengers per hour.

The huge archway that wraps the entire
terminal fills the building with natural light, reducing the need for
artificial light. The form is inspired by the
body and wings of an airplane and thus enclosed in a single metal skin; its bold
sweeping form - an outcome of the fusion of transparent and cloudy façade on
North-South and East-West respectively.

The terminal also
has a continuous 18 m-overhang on the South-South West and North-North-East
side, respecting the solar movement and avoiding the low harsh sun. On the
North-East and North-West, as well as on the South-East and South-West, solid
insulating walls are incorporated instead of glazing to avoid the penetrating
heat of the sun; allowing for maximum
daylight with minimum heat.

Well-defined spaces
in the terminal building facilitates organized movement of passengers ensuring
their comfort with coffee shops, restaurants, cafes and other amenities. A
stepped pool between the visitor’s concourse, check-in hall and baggage claim
hall are conceptualized as pockets of narrative interest, where the resonance
of streaming water accentuates the experience inside the terminal.
In a one-of-its-kind,
the parking lot, which can accommodate up to 250 cars, is roofed with steel
frame encrusted with solar voltaic panels, so that the energy produced can be
used for lighting. It also acts as a armor from the heat of the sun in that zone.
Adherence to
ECBC (Energy Conservation Building Code) ensures the motto of the firm to
conserve energy. Bricks are replaced with Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC)
blocks. The building has minimum
resource consumption and minimum waste generation, thus being the only GRIHA
certified airport in India.

Setting
milestones in the field of architecture, and building on the motto: “Green and
sustainable future”, the interiors of the airport are infused with a flavour of
regional art and Indian culture. Speaking about the approach of the design, Executive Director of
Creative Group, Er. Prabhpreet S. Shah said, “We have tried to follow an
innovative soft model approach in the design of this airport. It’s a
traditional process-driven model, providing an interactive experience
connecting people, place and time.”

excitement, anticipation and spirit of flight even from a distance.”
