Subtlety
in expression augments urbane design of new office by Abin Design Studio, Kolkata...
When
Ar. Abin Chaudhuri of Abin Design
Studio was briefed by his client at Techno Electric & Engineers Co. Ltd. to
deliver an office high on style but non-fussed otherwise, he zeroed in on
creating an unforgettably awe-inspiring, uber chic experience that has, by
default, become a major take-away from this office.
Simple
in composition and minimalist in materiality, the + 5800 sq. ft. office
is endorsed by its central spine, on either side of which lie the various
functionalities, comprising directors’ cabins, conferencing amenities, client
entertainment areas, support facilitators and services.
Bifurcating
the various areas with wooden louvered walls on one side and white-washed
textured walls on the other, the central corridor is treated as a minimalist
sculpture gallery.
Large
full-scale sculptures of the male figure are strategically positioned – either
moving into a wall, suspended from the ceiling, swaying... to immediately grab
eyeballs and create a rhythmic flow in this meandering lifeline.

The
treatment throughout is minimalist yet sophisticated. Points of contemplation
are devised: first the sculptures; then a feature wall with an end-to-end mural
made with electric equipment, alluding to the company’s professional origins; maquette-like
miniatures of the life-size human forms; floors and walls in Carara marble...
The
art of restraint is palpable. There is warmth emanating from the wooden
elements, especially the director’s chamber that sets off a welcoming classic
feel with deep-cushioned seating, plush carpets, et al; whilst louvered
partitions and their resultant chiaroscuro weave a distinct narrative amidst
this seemingly intellectual ambience.
The
restrained use of colours and materials, simple yet delicate detailing and the
inclusion of art and sculpture render this workplace a modern, tasteful office
space that is very vocal even with its silence!
