Ar. Abraham John proposes a truly 21st century Mumbai city in terms of green space and connectivity, with the ‘Bombay Greenway Project’ - an infrastructure project that will harvest a green corridor over the city’s existing 166 km. stretch of railway lines…
The linear railway lines
extending across 166 km. are the lifeline of the Mumbai metropolitan city life.
Stress, congestion, ensuing pollution, and the 9-5 grind are so intrinsic to
everyday living that people really have to be shaken out of their reverie to
take note of what’s prevailing around them and how the common man can actually
aspire for a better lifestyle.

Mumbai-based Abraham John Architects propose a well-rounded POA that could transform the city and
significantly impact the lives of millions on an everyday basis.

The initial proposal of the project looks at
creating a brand new oxygen-generating space, catering to the leisure needs of
the city as well as to active modes of transport by constructing a long green
corridor atop the existing railway lines that connect the city.
Developed on a self-sustainable model, the
proposal aims at healthy and safe pedestrian areas that will encourage people
to walk, run, cycle and make green spaces (we hardly have any of them in Mumbai
anymore) accessible to anyone anywhere in the city.

Predictably, the project will also bridge the east-west divide that is currently dictated by the
over ground railway system, simultaneously creating spaces for public performances,
art installations, daily markets; it will also explore the concept of urban
farming amidst panoramic vistas.

Working on a 360 degree solution,
the proposal aims to enhance the existing
system, by improving inter connectivity and suggesting multiple measures for an
improved railway corridor. Green measures that will enhance local
biodiversity, reduce high carbon footprint, and provide relief from Mumbai’s
perennial heat are also on the agenda.

Not
very long ago, IAnD had reported on the proposed Mumbai Esplanade
Project spearheaded by
Ar. Brinda Somaya, to decongest the esplanade area and improve the quality of
civic life. While such proposals are guided towards an
improved urban experience, constructive and speedy governmental intervention is
the key. Just like other urban planning endeavours, the Bombay Greenway Project too calls
for active citizen participation.
