Need a fine piece of art? Let colour guide your selection…

Art & artefacts are important elements of home and décor. Scale and proportion play a great role in accessorizing your interior with art and artefacts and colour is till date regarded as the element of décor and is considered as much singly as it is in conjunction with the overall scheme.

Very often, you see a beautiful painting or an exquisite figurine or a sensitive sculpture in metal scrap; you bring it home and then struggle to find it its rightful abode. And, many a time, the colours are inappropriate. How then do you optimize your efficiency in selecting a work of art while minimizing the errors on practical grounds?

Follow these spot pointers:
· The colours in a painting must suit the overall colour scheme of the room it is meant for. It need not necessarily ‘match’ it. Similar shades and complementing hues often mar an ambience rather than enhance it.

The work of art, especially a painting, should reflect the mood or atmosphere that you want the room to convey.
· Pure colours are generally used for accents. Look out for pure colours in your artefacts appropriately.

· Sophisticated colours are usually fairly light in value. They are often toned down so that they appear almost natural. A blue, for example may lean a little towards green but not enough to be called blue-green. Aqua is a blue-green that leans towards green; while turquoise leans towards blue.
· Try not to bring in colours like yellow-green, blues and purples into your dining room. They are considered to be most unappetizing!
· Bring out the best in your artefact by lighting it appropriately – from within or without. Make sure that it is presented well.

· While embellishing your walls with framed works, make sure that the frame matches the mood of the work rather than dominate it.

· Go for gold leaf or gilded artefacts only if they go well with your décor.
· Make sure that the work of art enhances the room in some way. Do not allow it to blend with the remaining so that it is lost and almost forgotten.
· Do not buy compulsively. Ascertain that it will compliment your décor and not be a misfit.
· Make a conscious collection.
· Always place your art right. Take care not to be haphazard in positioning it.

· Do not overdo your purchases of all things beautiful. You may have the money, but not necessarily the right place for it.
· Follow your instincts rather than be influenced by others. After all, your art effect, just as your home, is nothing but a reflection of you!
