The recently concluded Indian Resort Fashion Week (IRFW 2012) in Goa proved to be a curtain raiser for footwear fashion trends that are expected to dominate 2013. The year is expected to create space for delightful mix-n-match of materials in terms of footwear, teaming metallic accents with neutral tones.

Sophia Premjee, MD and Design in-charge of Lord’s Shoes, the official footwear partner for IRFW2012 echoes the views of numerous stylists and designers as she gives valuable insights into what 2013 holds for footwear connoisseurs. Going by the ‘Relaxed Chic’ range that Lord’s Shoes unveiled during IRFW 2012, the year is expected to offer spunky, spirited and feel-free look footwear as perfect complements to outfits that are expected to be in vogue through the year.

In line with the style that’s expected to dominate, colour palette for the year may hold a dressy mix of stilettos, peep toes, strappy platforms and open-toed heels in shimmering hues of muted metallic shades of gold, silver, zinc and copper; in vibrant citrus yellow, mandarin orange, turquoise blue, fuchsia pink and tropical green to suit myriad occasions. Spring-Summer 2013 colour palette may include unusual pastel hues like spearmint, coral and sky blue. A dash of neon giving a pop of colour to pumps, playful wedges dressed up with raffia or prints, a lot of variety in terms of materials are certain trends that one can look forward to in dressy footwear for 2013.

Footwear inspired by architectural influences is on the anvil and 2013 could witness sky-scraper heels, Flatforms (evolved version of platforms), sculptural shapes and architectonic forms leaving their indelible footprints. Embellishments will include buckles, braids and pops of colour, some influenced by ethnic inspirations and prints like batik. Colour blocking is another technique that might be popular. Mix and match of material will create a variety in the look of the shoes such as metallic colour paired with cork or jute, or fabric and patent combinations.

Considering that footwear trends are a mix of styles dating back to centuries, with Gladiator sandals, originating from Roman empire; platform heels, having their roots in ancient Greece and Japanese Geisha, collections of 2013 could well be inspired by the popular styles of 70s.

In essence, no-nonsense flats, spunky sandals, elegant heels for women and oxford lace ups and loafers in unusual colours for men are expected to lend an element of effortless style to one’s overall ensemble through 2013.

  1. It's funny how there is such variety with women's footwear compared to that of men. Are we that simple to please when it comes to footwear?
